Versão portuguesa da Tradução de Joseph Smith do Novo Testamento

A primeira tradução da Bíblia à língua portuguesa baseada em textos antigos, foi feita em fins do século dezessete por João Ferreira de -, um sacerdote protestante, e é comparável à tradução inglesa Versão King James (VKJ). A Bíblia de Ferreira de - já passou por algumas revisões e atualizações, sendi adaptada ao português brasileiro. A edição de - Corrigida Fiel é a mais conhecida e a mais usada pelos membros da Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos últimos Dias no Brasil. O Woodland Institute, bem como o Departamento de Tradução da Igreja, utilizou-se desta versão como base para produzir a Tradução de Joseph Smith (TJS) em português.

Ao analisarmos as revisões da TJS da VKJ e comparando-as à tradução portuguesa, descobrimos que aproximadamente noventa por cento das alterações feitas por Joseph Smith podem ser transferidas e aplicadas à Bíblia portuguesa. Cerca de dez por cento das reviões feitas por Joseph consistem em correções gramáticais e emprego de palavras específicas à língua inglesa, as quais não se aplicam à versão portuguesa. Joseph Smith fez algumas modificações, muitas vezes significativas, de sintaxe que correspondem a correções já feitas pelos estudiosos que revisaram a edição Ferreira de -. é notável que nestes casos os eruditos modernos, que têm acesso a textos e pesquisas mais confiáveis, chegaram às mesmas conclusões que o Profeta chegou sem acesso a estas fontes.

Na maioria dos casos, as correções da TJS se integram facilmente-na sua forma traduzida-à Bíblia Ferreira de -. Em alguns casos, porém, fizeram-se modificações ao texto português para mantê-lo em harmonia com a TJS. Destacam-se estas alterações em tipo itálico. Alguns versículos foram, ou omitidos, ou colocados em ordem diferente pelo Profeta. Estas ocorrências são notadas [entre colchetes]. Em alguns versículos Joseph Smith só omitiu certos vocábulos, sem acrescentar nada. Tais versículos são assinalados com asterisco (*). As passagens que não foram alteradas pelo Profeta aparecem no site do Woodland Institute em coluna de meia página. As passagens da TJS que diferem do texto bíblico original ocupam toda a página, sendo que as alterações e acréscimos do profeta aparecem em negrito.

Portuguese Rendition of the Joseph Smith Translation of the New Testament

The first translation of the Bible from ancient texts into the Portuguese language was done by João Ferreira de -, an early Protestant priest in the late 1600s, and is comparable to the English King James Version (KJV). The Ferreira de - Bible has been revised, updated, and adapted for Brazilian readers. The version known as the - Corrigida Fiel (faithfully corrected) is currently the most used Bible by Brazilian members of the Church of Jesus Christ. The Woodland Institute, as well as the Church Translation Department, has used this edition as the basis for rendering the Prophet Joseph Smith’s Bible translation (JST) into Portuguese.

Upon analyzing the JST revisions of the KJV and comparing them with their Portuguese counterparts, we found that approximately 90 percent of the Prophet Joseph Smith’s changes were applicable to and would carry over into the Portuguese Bible. About 10 percent of the changes made by Joseph consisted of either English-specific grammar or usage changes, which were nontransferable, or small, but often significant wording changes that Portuguese-speaking Bible scholars had already made in the corrected Ferreira de - version. Remarkably, modern scholars with access to better textual sources than the Prophet Joseph Smith came to the same conclusions as the Prophet, who did not have access to those sources.

In most instances, the JST changes flow smoothly-in their translated form-into the Ferreira de - Bible. In some cases, however, adjustments were made to the Portuguese text to bring it into harmony with the JST. These changes are shown in italics. Some verses were either deleted or placed elsewhere in the text by the Prophet. These instances are noted in [brackets]. In some verses Joseph Smith only deleted words, with no additions. Such verses are marked with an asterisk (*). As displayed on the Woodland Web site, verses from the Ferreira de - version that underwent no change are displayed in half-page columns. JST verses, when different from the original biblical text, are displayed in page-wide format-with the Prophet’s changes or additions in bold print.
